adaptation review

Last week I watched " The Glass Menagerie" in Ms. Guarino's classroom. We finished this play on 12.14. the main character in this play is Amanda---Katharine Hepburn, Tom---Sam Waterston, Laura ---Joanna Miles, Jim ---Michael Moriarty. The director of this play is: Anthony Harvey.

This play is about a poor family near to the Missouri, they live in a town and have a small house. There are three main people in the family: Tom, Amanda, Laura. Amanda is Tom's mom and he is also the younger brother in the family. Laura is the bigger sister in the family, she is Amanda's daughter. There is one more person in their family---their dad Mr. Wingfield. But he doesn't show in the play. In the house there is a picture of him, Tom and Laura's father leaves the family. Tom works in the warehouse company, he doesn't like to work their, because he thinks is boring. His dream is become a writer, he likes to write. Laura has a bad leg, sometimes is hard to move. She study in a business company, but she be kicked out by school and she didn't tell her mom. This makes Amanda very angry. Laura like play with Glass Menagerie, these glass object is the friends of her. Amanda is a proud women, she likes to talk about her experience, she always argue with Tom The play begin with a monologue of Tom. He sits on the steps and reading the newspaper, then he turn around and begin to say his monologue. Then the scene turns to the beginning of the story. It begins with a dinner scene. Three people sitting around the table eating their dinner. Tom argue with his mom, because his mom is so annoy, it's hard for him to eat. Tom always arguing with his mom, so he really wants to leave his family, just like his father. During the arguments Tom breaks the Glass Menagerie, he feels sorry to Laura. Every time when Tom wants to escape he will says he needs a cigarette. Then Amanda said: " if you can find a person who can supports our family you can leave." Amanda needs money to feed herself and Laura. Next day Tom brings Jim back to home, at first Laura and Jim has a good time, but in the end Amanda and Laura know that Jim already engaged. Laura feels sad and she gives the horn of unicorn to Jim as a souvenir. Amanda feels so angry, she thinks this is Tom's fault. But actually Tom also doesn't know Jim is engaged. Amanda and Tom argue again, then Tom leaves the family. The play turns back to the monologue and shows a scene that Amanda and Laura eat the candle dinner together. In the end Laura blow off the candles.

I think the theme of the story is the life of people at that period of time. Wingfield family is in the lower class of the society. They are poor and Tom is the only person who works in the family. Because Tome has to work for the family, he can't achieve his dream. Amanda always wondered her previous experience and now she always complaining her life. Laura has a bad leg. She feels shy and nervous, she thinks she can't have any callers. After she be kicked out by the business college she feels upset. Their life is tough, everyone have a hard life. They can't achieve their goals and they can't have a comfortable life.

Every time when the scene changed the screen will turn black. Then a new scene appears. In the house there are three parts, one is living room, and another is kitchen. There is a door connect with the fire escape. The director separate the three parts clearly. When they are eat meals they will go to the kitchen. When they are free they will sit in the living room. Every time when Tom wants to leave he will goes to the fire escape. During the daytime the light is bright, when they have dinner the light turns to the warm yellow, sometimes they will use candles when they are eating dinner. During midnight the light turns to dim yellow. In this play, when Laura and Jim are dancing Jim plays some music, the music for that time is slow and romantic. Amanda wears formal dress when she meets Jim or when she goes outside. Laura always wears a dress at home. Tom wears pajamas at home and formal dress for outside. In the another character Jim wears formal dress(blazer) when he goes to tom's home. In the play Tom, Amanda and Laura get most attention, because they are main characters.

I think Tom is the best character in this play, the actor of this character is Sam Waterston. I think Sam Waterston set Tom well because he adds emotion when he was acting. I like the arguing scene. Amanda and Tom was arguing, Tom wants to leave, but Amanda disagree. Sam Waterston yelled at Amanda and he shows the anger of Tom depends on the volume change. In the end of the play Tom shows the sad mood after he leaves the family. Overall I really like this play. First because this play is very famous. Second the actors act these character vividly. When I was watching the movie I feels the helpless and the anger of each character in the play. I can feel that their life is tough. I learned more about how to show the emotion better from Sam Waterston.
