Character Analysis Of The Glass Menagerie
Tom:
"Mother, I haven't enjoy one bite of my dinner because of your constant directions on ow to eat it. It's you that makes me hurry through my meals with your hawk-like attention to every bite I take. I'm getting a cigarette.
In this sentence is about Tom complaining his mom. Because his mom is so annoying. She lets Tom to chew food before he swallow the food. Tom will thinks his mom talks a lot, because he already grow up. He doesn't need his mom look after him. I can know that he is impatient when he says I'm getting a cigarette, his mom is unendurable. In the book every time when he wants to leave the family to have some fresh air and have some free time to think about his writing. So he has noble ideal, he won't waste his time on small problems. Tom works in a shoe warehouse. He always wants to escape from his family, just like his dad. Tome likes to be a writer he always writes something.
Amanda:
" I remember one Saturday afternoon in Blue Mountain when your mother was a girl she received---seventeen---gentlemen callers."
For this sentence Amanda is talking about her experience in the past. She says she has lots of callers at that time, many people admired her. She describe the scene as a beautiful place, she lived in a beautiful valley. In my opinion at that time Amanda needn't have seventeen callers, I think four or five is normal but seventeen is too much. I think her vanity is too strong, she wants her kids know that in the past their mom is charming. Their mom is Strong. She still has the picture of her husband, and the picture is stick on the foremost place in their house, so I think her desire is she wants her family love her. Won't leave her alone.
Laura:
" Mother, I'll bring in a Coffee." "She loves to tell it"
Laura says two sentence to comfort the atmosphere, maybe she doesn't wants her family always have discordant conversation. Because of her physical problems she can't walk well. She doesn't have many friends, she only has her brother and mom. The only friends is the Glass Menagerie. I think she is a peace maker. she doesn't want her brother leave, because Tom is the only person who earn the money. I think she be isolated by the society, after she be kicked out by the business school, she feels upset. So she lose her social communication skills, she can't make friends with others.
