Response to the first three stories

      In the first story the author talks about the relationships and the life experience in the story. Papa and Female narrator have a bad relationship at first. But in the end the daughter understand her father of why her father opposing her love. In the second story the author Danticat is telling a story about a daughter doesn't understand her mom's tradition at first and accept the ritual tradition in the end. In the story the author also talks about the life experience, The manman escape from Dominican Republic to survive. Others think manman is a witch, so they arrest manman. In the end manman is burned by someone in the prison. In the third story, there are three people in the story, Guy, Lili, and Little Guy. They live in a poor environment. The food they eat is simple, the place they live is small, and the life of them are tragic. Guy thinks he is a failure person who can bring happiness to his family. He feels hopeless when he suicide. The three stories tell us the life experience, three of them are telling a tragic story. Everyone in the story feels sad and tragic. 

      In the first story, there is a quote that is about the papa and the female narrator when papa finds out the tape of male narrator. Papa feels angry. " He started yelling at me, asking if I was crazy keeping them. He is just waiting for the gasoline ban to be lifted so we can get out of the city." Papa think the male narrator is a person who can brings danger to them. In this story papa doesn't want to opposing his daughter's love, but he has to in order to protect her daughter. Their life experience for now not allowed Female narrator fall in love with male narrator. Their family doesn't have enough money, papa already gives all the money to the macoutes. They have a tragic life. They have to get out of the city and they have to spent lots of money to do that. It's not worth it, the life required this family to move and disconnect with the modern society. In the end, the family move to a place that can't see the sea, it also means the female narrator can't see the male anymore. The life experience of the family and the female is not fair and it's also tragic. 

      In the beginning of the story " A Wall of Fire Rising" the family of Guy have two good news that his son is going to act a revolutionary Boukman in the play, and Guy gets a extra job. But Danticat also talks about the food they eat is: " Lili, was squatting in the middle of their one-room home, spreading cornmeal mash on banana leaves for their supper." Two good news and the food they eat have a contrast, so that the audience can notice that their life is tragic and they are poor. Although they are poor, they have happiness. In the end of the story, Guy dead. Danticat depict the action of little guy clearly. " The boy continued reciting his lines, his voice rising to a man's grieving roar. He kept his eyes closed, his fists balled at his side as he continued with his newest lines" This quote shows the sad mood of little guy. He is young and he looses his father. We can compare this to the beginning of the story. I think the author wants to express the tragic life experience of the family and the sad mood of the little guy.
