Character Analysis


Lili is the character in the third story "A Wall of Fire Rising". Her role is a mom of a family. She has a son Little Guy and a husband Guy. Lili doesn't have a Job, because in that time period of Haiti if people want to have a job they have to be marked on the list. Because she doesn't have a job, she has to take care of her son every day. She put all her attention on Little Guy. The time period of the story is around 1935, the people at that time is under controlled by papa doc. At that time it's also the time of Haiti Massacure. All the Haitian have to listen to the papa doc or they will be killed by macoutes. Lili lives in Haiti with her husband and her son. Their house is very small, and there is only one little room in the house. The house is near to the factory that is Guy's workplace. Lili's son and her husband stay with her every day. She cooks for the whole family and she takes care of her son. She doesn't have a job. She has nothing to do during the day. When her son and her husband come back, she feels better. Lili is the mom of the poor family. She doesn't have a job. She also doesn't have the opportunity to have a job. Her identity is just a housewife. Her relationship is that Lili is the mom of Little Guy, she wants him to have a good future, so that little Guy doesn't have to have the same fate as she has. She is the wife of Guy, She and her husband stay together but they don't love each other. Lili spends all the attention on little Guy instead of Guy. Lili wants her son to be a successful person in the future. After she knows her son is going to act Boukman in the school play, she feels happy and exciting. Because Boukeman is one of the revolutionary leaders of Haiti. Bouke man is a hero of Haiti. She thinks let her son stay in school is a good choice for Little Guy. She thinks her fate is not that good. She thinks Little Guy should have a better life than her. That's why she put all her attention on Little Guy. But Guy doesn't think Little Guy should stay in school. This is an obstacle for Lili. Lili and Guy have different opinions on whether Little Guy should stay in school or not. Guy think Little Guy should go to work. Guy wants to put Little Guy on the list so that when Little Guy has an opportunity to go to work, Little Guy can work for the family. Guy think earn money for the family is more important than going to school. Lili argues with Guy in order to let Little Guy go to school to study. She has an argument with Guy. She list some examples to convince Guy. She thinks let Little Guy have a better future is important so that little Guy doesn't have to be hungry or starving in the future.
