The theme that is present in the first four story is parents always take care of their kid. Parents always want to protect their kid, they want them to have a good future. In the third story “A Wall of Fire Rising” Lili puts all her attention on Little Guy, she even has a argument with Guy about whether Little Guy should go to work. She says in the story that “ For a young boy to be on any list like that might influence his destiny. I don’t want him on the list.” I think Lili put all her attention on Little Guy is important to the story. Because she doesn’t really care about Guy. I think this is one of the reasons of why Guy suicide in the end. Guy thinks no one cares about him. Guy feels he is a loser, even his wife doesn’t care about him that much. In the fourth story “ night women” the female narrator is also trying to protect her son. Although the female narrator always lying, this action is protecting her son from the truth. The father of the family may leave or died, so the mom has to work in order to earn more money. In order to protect her son she create a lie. Angel is a lie but angel is beautiful and sacred in kid’s mind. They want to believe there is an angel. I believe when we are young we wants to meet with angel. Angel is also important to the story, because it’s a symbol in the story. I think it symbolizes the hope and look forward to the future. Parents care about kid can also let the readers to think about whether they care about their kid. Danticat’s parents leaved Danticat when she was young, this action shows that Danticat’s parents can’t always care about her. Depends on the fourth story, Danticat may want her parents can take care about her while they’re are making money. The author Danticat wants to use this kind of way to appeal the readers care about their kid. Maybe at that time period parents always think about how to make money because their family is poor. Parents may cares more about money than their kids.
