Suzette--- A young Haitian woman who works in New York. She thinks it's annoying that her mom keeps criticizing her. But she still loves her mom. She wants her mom to be proud of her.

Suzette's mother (unnamed)--- A woman also works in New York. Her job is to take care of the kids who came from a rich family. She likes to watch TV shows that about the lottery, but she never buys it.

Summary 

Suzette follows her mom to her workplace. They enter a rich neighborhood. On their way, Suzette begins to recall the memory between her and her mom. Such as her mom will ask will she give the seat to a pregnant woman. Suzette's mom likes to watch the lottery show, but she never played it and so on. Finally, they arrived at the workplace. A woman let Suzette's mom look after her son. Suzette thinks her mom and the son has a secret relationship

Concern

I don't really know what is the timeline of this story. Is the author using the memory to tell this story? I also confused about why Suzette's mom gives the son a can of soda. In the story, the author used a different font to show her thinking under mind?
