Foot Loose Review
Title: Footloose
Author: Walter Dobbie and Dean Pitchford
Date: 3/2/19
Location: Cheshire Academy Black Box Theater
Director: Mrs. Guarino
Major Actors: Ren - Tony Wang, Ariel - Livvy Williamson, Reverend Moore - Aaron, Vi Moore - Jenna D., Ethel - Cassidy, Chuck - Nan, Willard - Ray, Rusty - Mao, Wendy Jo - Caroline, Urleen - Amelia, Wes - Nate, Etc.
The story is mainly about a young student named Ren who is grown up in Chicago City goes to a Midwestern town named Bomont. When he arrives there, he founds out that in Bomont people can't dance. Five years ago, people in Bomont love to sing, dance, and play rock music. But because of an accident on a bridge that four teenagers died in that accident. After that the controller of Bomont---Shaw Moore banned all the thing related to dancing. After a few weeks, Ren falls in love with Shaw Moore's daughter---Ariel Moore, but actually, Ariel Moore is dating with Chuck Cranston at that time. Willard is one of Ren's best friends. Willard is a boy who is very shy. At first, Ren thinks dancing is a normal thing that everyone can do, but Willard doesn't have the confidence to against law with Ren. But after Ren shows Willard dance is very interesting, Willard and Ren combine together to against Shaw Moore and let him remove the law of banning dancing. I think the main theme of this play is we have to against the thing which is wrong. We should have enough confidence to against the wrong law, although Shaw Moore has more power in Bomont, Ren still has the confidence to debate with Shaw Moore. Ren doesn't want anyone who loves dancing loses the chance to dance in this small town. He wants to remove the law and let anyone have the chance to enjoy dancing. In the play, Shaw Moore thinks the music he plays in the church is legally, but rock music is illegal. This shows that Shaw Moore is a feodal person. Ren against him is a behave of rebellion.
In the play, the stage is changing between each scene. The most special stage set up is in the scene where Chuck stays. On the stage, there are many things that can show these people love to sing and play rock music. The wheels are on the ground, in the background, there are three triangles, on the triangles, it writes that rock music. The audience can clearly notice what is the background of this scene. In the play at the beginning of the play, when the accident happened there is a sound of a car crash, and then the light of the scene turns red means someone dies. For the costume, Tony always wear sneakers, sweatpants and something like that. It gives me a feeling of foot loses. When I saw Chuck's costume, when I saw his wear style, I can notice that Chuck is a person who always mad at other people. When I heard the music that Tony and other actors are singing I was very relaxed and I was following them and dance together. I think music gives me a good mood to watch the play. When the three girls were singing " somebody, somebody" the light was pointing at them, in the background, the other actors are not that important to compare to the three girls. The actors in the background just provide a better background, because they wear a glove of the eye, it relates to the song.
In the play, I like the character, Willard, who is the best friend of Ren. Ray is the actor of this character. Ray add moany body language and facial expression into this character. When Willard first time meets Ren, he is a little bit shy. Ray looked like shrinking his body to show he is shy. When Ray is singing "my mom said" he adds lots of body language, he even dance during the singing, to show that he also likes the feeling of singing and dancing.
I like the play very much, I think it's the most interesting play I have ever seen in our school's plays. I like it very much. I think it's my first time dancing together with the actors. I like the music in the music, the music let me feel relax and enjoy. When I was watching the play, I was like a hundred percent focus on the play. When I notice the play ends, I felt disappointed because I want to watch more.
